What NPT actually costs
Rig day rates mean waiting time dominates the arithmetic. When an operation stops because a component is not on board, the delay costs more than almost any freight decision that could have prevented it.
That inverts normal logistics economics: the cheapest transport is not necessarily the lowest cost.
The logistics-driven causes of NPT
- A critical part is not on board because it was ordered after the last sailing.
- Cargo rejected at the quay for missing certification or incorrectly marked weight.
- Wrong product grade in tank, so bulk cannot be transferred.
- Equipment held in customs.
- Deck space occupied by backload that should already have returned.
What genuinely reduces NPT
Early visibility of demand. The sooner logistics sees an upcoming order, the greater the chance it makes a scheduled sailing rather than triggering an emergency shipment.
Fewer interfaces. Every handover between parties is a place information can drop. One coordinator holding the whole chain measurably reduces that risk.
Criticality marking. Not everything is equally urgent. When cargo is prioritised by operational consequence rather than order date, scarce capacity lands where it matters.
Measurement is a precondition
Without logging deviations and their causes, NPT discussions stay anecdotal. A simple, consistent deviation register — what was delayed, why, and what the consequence was — provides the basis for prioritising improvements.
