Rig mobilisation is the planned process of preparing, equipping and moving a drilling unit from one location to the next — including every piece of equipment, consumable and document that has to travel with it. It is one of the most time-critical operations in the offshore industry.
Mobilisation versus demobilisation
Mobilisation covers everything before the rig is operational on the new location: contract review, equipment lists, procurement, cargo certification, transport to base, shipment and offshore receipt.
Demobilisation is the reverse movement — return of equipment, backload of waste and materials, and restoring the rig to its contractual condition. Both are normally planned together, because return capacity has to be booked before the outbound leg starts.
The four phases of a mobilisation
- Planning: scope alignment against operator specification, equipment list, routing and time window.
- Preparation: packing into certified cargo carrying units, weighing, marking and issuing lifting certificates.
- Transport: road or sea transport to the supply base, then booking vessel capacity or helicopter.
- Receipt: offshore discharge, verification against manifest, and return of empty units.
Why the time window governs everything
Rig day rates run into hundreds of thousands of kroner. When a mobilisation slips, it is not only logistics that stops — the entire drilling operation waits. That is why the planning phase, not the transport itself, is where most of the savings sit.
Weather windows on the Norwegian Continental Shelf are short and unpredictable. A realistic mobilisation plan always carries defined reserve capacity and an agreed priority order for what ships first if only part of the cargo makes the sailing.
The documentation that has to be in place
Missing paperwork stops cargo just as effectively as bad weather. A typical mobilisation requires a cargo manifest, lifting certificates for each unit (DNV 2.7-1 / EN 12079), dangerous goods documentation where relevant, and customs documentation for equipment crossing borders.
