Lifts between vessel and installation are among the highest-risk operations offshore. The load hangs free, the surface beneath it moves, and a mistake cannot be corrected mid-lift. That is why lifting is tightly procedure-driven.

Why offshore lifts are different

Onshore, the crane sits on stable ground. Offshore, the vessel moves in the swell while the load swings. That produces dynamic forces which can significantly exceed the static weight of the load.

This is why both the cargo unit and the lifting gear must be designed and certified for offshore use — ordinary lifting equipment does not carry the necessary margins.

The lift plan

Any non-routine lifting operation should have a lift plan. It describes the load and its weight, the selected lifting gear, lift points and centre of gravity, wind and sea limits, communication and role allocation, and what happens if the operation has to be aborted.

Roles in a lifting operation

  • Crane operator: performs the lift and holds the right to stop it.
  • Banksman/slinger: ensures correct slinging and gives signals.
  • Lift supervisor: holds operational responsibility for execution.
